“Gabrielle” arrived at our center in early June. Fearing she was pregnant, she had taken the morning-after pill, but ended up getting sick. “I threw up the pill” she exclaimed. One month later, after noticing changes in her body Gabrielle took three over-the-counter pregnancy tests, all of which registered positive.
At just 19 years old, Gabrielle was overwhelmed by the test results, and felt as though her support system had dwindled to only her boyfriend and his parents, with whom she lived. Gabrielle’s relationship with her mother had been estranged for quite some time, but her father had kept in contact with her. Gabrielle added that sadly, her mother was still ‘not ready’ for her to return home.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
After spending some time with her client advocate, Gabrielle shared that she was adopted from Columbia when she was 11 years old. The conversation pivoted, and the subject of adoption assumed a spiritual context for Gabrielle as she indicated a desire to grow closer to God. She smiled as her client advocate shared that scripture calls every believer ‘an adopted child of God’, and she was intrigued to learn that when the book of Romans was written, a natural parent could disinherit a natural child, but never disinherit an adopted child. God assures us in Deuteronomy of His unwavering love for his children:
The joy in Gabrielle was visible, the word of God serving as preamble to more discussion. God was surely present as Gabrielle and her advocate shared in a conversation about His love for her. As their time together continued, it was evident that Gabrielle was becoming more and more confident in her abilities to raise a child. When her advocate inquired about her current relationship with God, Gabrielle answered,
“My boyfriend talks to me about God a lot”
At the close of her session, filled with a fresh touch of God’s love, Gabrielle prayed to receive Christ, joining 38 other clients who also made commitments of faith this year. God played an active role in Gabrielle’s decision to keep her baby. As she left our center, Gabrielle was radiant with the Lord’s love, and said “I feel ‘lighter’!”
